Drafthouse Milkshake Contest!

The Alamo Drafthouse has a "design your own milkshake" contest, where you submit what kind of milkshake you'd like to see on their menu. I would LOVE if they had a vegan milkshake, and I think with enough pressure they would totally do it! (Remember a couple years back when we got Whole Foods to start selling the first vegan donuts in town?!)

On the site, it does say that the base has to be vanilla softserve, but I think that we need to challenge that- coconut milk ice cream is just as good! There is a comments section at the bottom to where you can voice your input.

Lets get them to make vegan milkshakes!

I am really excited about this for some reason. I found a list of movie characters that are portrayed as veg, it would be cool to name the milkshake after one of them! Can anyone think of any interesting/witty milkshake names based off a veg character?

Hell yes! I'll have a Harrelson (though is he too raw for milkshakes? haha)

I will totally make a special soft serve & deliver it to The Alamo if they consider doing a vegan milkshake!!!

I love salted caramel, Oreos and peanut butter with crushed peanuts on top. Yowza! I call it "The Stoner Special" because it's the perfect combination of salty, sweet, crunchy & creamy.

I asked them on twitter if we could submit vegan recipes (and I mentioned sweet ritual) and they wrote back

"The base you must use is not vegan version - we recommend submitting one vegan and one w/provided base!"

So that's frustrating. What if I submitted a recipe and then it won and I couldn't drink it!!! I don't know why they don't want to be more inclusive?

If you like them on facebook or on twitter please ask for vegan milkshakes too!

Wait, I'm confused about what they're recommending, that's statements not computing for me?

They are looking for something that is easily reproducible at all of their locations, including their new out of state locations.  So they wouldn't be interested in say Sweet Rituals softserve mix, because unless they wanted to license/purchase the recipe from them, they wouldn't be able to reproduce it elsewhere.  Ultimately, they are probably going to go with the ingredients that are most readily available to them, and that they likely already have in stock (like various movie candies, chocolate syrup, etc).

Honestly, while I love the Alamo as a venue, I really don't hold out hope that they are going to have a vegan epiphany very soon.  All of their vegan items are accidental...they are only vegan because it is possible to remove the offending ingredients during preparation, and the list of menu items was only collected by dedicated work of customers, not the staff.  I don't think Tim League is at all concerned about attracting vegan customers - his business model is doing fine without that tact; he's just not going to go out of his way to alienate us.

While I agree with you that it is unlikely the alamo is going to give us a vegan milkshake I think it's important to keep asking and have hope!

Honestly, our best hope is to convince them that it is worthwhile to get a vegan cheese for the pizzas.  If they at least do that, they'd be able to more accurately gauge interest in vegan options without having to add whole new items to the menu.  Once they can see that there is adequate interest, then we can start making demands happy
