Fuck Madam Mam's

I am pissed.

So, my office has been planning a company lunch and decided to choose somewhere nearby that would be Vegan friendly. We had two choices: Crown & Anchor Pub and Madam Mam's. I opted for the latter, since I knew for a fact that Crown & Anchor had nothing Vegan.

I called Madam Mam's on Friday to ensure I would have plenty of dietary options (they said I did), only to arrive today and find that only one dish on the menu (a really boring one) was not cooked with fish sauce and/or chicken broth. What's worse is that the waiter, who scarcely spoke/understood English, would not allow me even a simple substitution.

So anyway, don't go there. Tell your friends.

oops, i clicked on this thread thinking it was about "oriental massage parlors".

but since i'm here:  yeah, that sucks, but it's not surprising.  we've had many problems with local asian restaurants.

here's one thread (that gets off topic during the middle):  http://www.veganaustin.org/topic.php?id=816

and there have been other problems at Veggie Heaven, Ka Prow, the huge new Asian Market, and other places.  sadly, i've just been trying to make thai food at home lately.

we should do a thai night...maybe all cook together, instead of potluck style.  the magic ingredients are a good VEGAN curry paste (which i have-i promise-no fishy), spicy thai basil, and kaffir lime leaves, which are really hard to come by at the store.  i'm lucky enough to have a friend who grows them in her garden, so next time y'all want to do a thai night, just post up a thread and we'll get it going.  i always enjoyed cooking parties better than potlucks anyway--more time spent with friends, rather than alone in the kitchen slaving away.

madam mam's sucks anyway.  the few things i've had there (thinking they were V) were disgusting.  it's seriously the worst thai food i have ever had.  you ain't missing shit, kid happy

i've been wanting to do a thai night as well for a long time.

and have you actually found kaffir lime anywhere in town? i searched all over town for it but couldn't find it and just used limes.

i've got a thai vegetarian cooking book and they ask for kaffir lime in several recipes. i need to try making my own paste again. my problem is that some ingredients i'm just not sure how to use, like star anise? i wasn't sure if i was supposed to extract the seeds from inside, or just try to grind up the whole thing.

who has a big open kitchen to host the thai night?

well, i wish i could offer my kitchen but it's really too small (btw, anyone live at oak creek apts?  that would be cool to have some fun neighbors!)

anyway, i can get us a ton of kaffir lime leaves from my friend's garden, for free!(really they taste nothing like fresh lime juice.) i've heard you can *sometimes* get them at the store, but even the asian markets don't carry them 100% of the time.  anyway, i like the red and green curry pastes from Thai Kitchen brand (sold in small jars @ Whole Foods, Wheatsville, Central Market, etc. and certified VEGAN).  they contain some ground kaffir leaves, some thai ginger (galangal), and other essential spices.

so whoever's got a fat man's kitchen, step up!  i would LOVE to have a cooking party with you all.  sundays are best for me, pretty much any time.

When I build my dream house, the whole house is going to be one big kitchen! Except maybe the bathrooms... and part of the garage.
