Hi everyone, we're really looking forward to seeing all of you at tomorrow's fourth semi-annual Gathering of the Tribes.

Many of you have been to a Gathering before, so for the most part you know how it works. But I'd like to bring to your attention two key points. One is that this Gathering is for a special cause: we're raising money for Sunny Day Farms, an animal sanctuary near San Antonio. Financially they've always had a battle, and after the recent goat rescue, they need our help more than ever. We'll have LOTS of raffle prizes to give away, so PLEASE be generous and buy lots of raffle tickets!

The second is that we'd like to give everyone a brief guide to what makes a successful potluck. The last Gathering in October was less than stellar in the food department, mostly on accident of too many people bringing chips/dip or dessert, not enough main dishes. So I've adapted an article from Molly's blog to help everyone get a good handle on how to make this work. See A BRIEF GUIDE TO VEGAN POTLUCKING below.

A few other notes: please come at 4:00pm instead of 5:00, we're doing this an hour earlier this year so we don't end in the dark.

Also, we (there's just two of us!) could REALLY use help at the park! If some of you would like to come just a little earlier at 3:30, we need help getting things set up, and then getting everyone checked in when the arrivals start! Then when we're all done, PLEASE pitch in to help clean the park up. We get charged if we leave trash or items behind. When we're all done, some of us will head over to Maudie's Tex-Mex (1212 South Lamar) for drinks and afterparty, and then maybe to Lick's for vegan ice cream.

Lastly: the whole reason the Gathering of the Tribes was conceived was to bring all of Austin's different groups of vegans and vegetarians together in one place, and help them MEET NEW PEOPLE. We all spend lots of time with our friends at the events we go to week after week, month after month. When you come to the Gathering tomorrow, make an effort to mingle and introduce yourself, and then consider sitting while you eat with people who you've just met, so you can get to know each other. This is how we build our community!

And now... A BRIEF GUIDE TO VEGAN POTLUCKING (Thanks Molly!)

1. Bring a vegan* dish to feed eight adults. If you could consume everything you brought by yourself, it's probably not enough. If you're coming with another person, be sure to double the amount of your dish.

2. Try to bring something you'd be excited to eat. It's no problem if it's something you picked up from the prepared food section at Whole Foods or Wheatsville, especially if it's not among the popular choices so many of us get for take-out regularly. It's also OK to bring a giant bowl of fresh fruit chunks and berries--but try not to give in to the convenience of a bag of chips and jar of salsa from the aisle. Just a little thought and effort goes a long way to make enjoyable potluck dishes.

And we really want to encourage you to bring something you made. Potlucks are always better the more homemade food that there is. There are tons of easy vegan recipes all over the Web that you could easily make in the afternoon before you come. Check out this Lone Star Plate article for a list of suggestions: http://vgn.me/ny

3. Be sure to bring your own plates, utensils, beverage, and a serving utensil for your dish. The best thing would be to bring plastic dishes that you can take home with you to wash, rather than throw paper ones in the trash. The recycling bin at the park is not very large.

4. Don't take huge portions or seconds before everyone has had an opportunity to get food. With such a large amount of people, it will be impossible for everyone to get a taste of everything, but do consider how many people could get a small portion from what you're about to put on your plate. If the dish is divided into small portions for you, please take just one.

*Some of you may be new or inexperienced when it comes to vegan ingredients, so aside from the obvious "no meat, seafood, cheese, dairy or eggs", here are some common "uh-ohs" that people don't always think to look for or ask about: honey, butter, chicken or beef broth, lard, gelatin, egg noodles, anchovies, and whey.

Planning to bring a double-pot of that Mac & Cheeze that Chef Phil taught us at the last VNA potluck. He said we could hand out the recipe, so we'll be bringing copies tomorrow.

We gathered $576 worth of raffle prizes to benefit Sunny Day Farms animal sanctuary in LaCoste (if you read about their recent goat rescue, you know they need our help...if 100 people spend $5 or more on raffle tickets, that's $500+ for SDF!). Plus we gathered $250 worth of free door prizes. You can see the list at http://ATX.vg/. Let's make this the best Gathering of the Tribes yet!

Thanks to all of the generous Gathering of the Tribes attendees, we collected $499 yesterday for Sunny Day Farms, just $1 short of our $500 goal, so we'll toss in another buck.  Thanks to everyone who donated raffle prizes (and door prizes!) and to everyone who bought raffle tickets!  The official headcount was 128 people, which made this the largest Gathering to date.  We hope to see you at the next Gathering on September 29th for World Vegetarian Day (October 1st)!

Congratulations to Molly, who won the big prize, the Restaurant Bundle.  She'll be dining all over town, at Casa de Luz, Bombay Express, Maoz Vegetarian, Tom's Tabooley, and Sweet Ritual.  She also won the Lick Ice Creams package (2 small ice creams, a pint, and a t-shirt).
