I recently got engaged and am looking for ideas, suggestions and details from other vegans that got married in the Austin area. I'd love to hear about your planning, wedding day, other wedding related events and anything else you might think would be helpful to another vegan planning a wedding in Austin. Venues and wedding related businesses to avoid would also be good to know about. Thanks!

I was recently at a wedding at Green Pastures.  It seemed a bit rushed to me (I think they close at 11 or something), but what food they had that was vegan was excellent.  I'm pretty sure that venue requires that you use their food, but what I had was really good.  I just can't remember what all it was right now besides a ratatouille.

If you search the forums there was a topic on vegan wedding cakes with a few vendors mentioned and some other threads on catering: http://veganaustin.org/topic.php?id=4202&r=29554#r29554

Here are our reviews from vegan weddings:

http://www.greenislandcatering.com/index.php?p=1_13_Reviews

These were entered on other sites (like wedding wire, etc) also at the bottom of the page is a link to our yelp reviews

and here are facebook photo albums of several weddings we have catered:

(*note I'm still not the best at getting pictures, these are just a few of the events we've done, I don't always get a chance to stop and take pictures because its usually the last thing on my mind but I update my facebook more often with new photos than my website for example)

and lastly here is a helpful link to event venues in austin and which ones allow outside catering, max capacity, etc
http://austin.texasweddingsltd.com/details.jsp?category=36

And as always for weddings (and other large events) we offer free tastings, all you need to do is email me and we can start talking ideas along with a quote

hope this helps happy

We had our vegan wedding at Vista on Seward Hill (which is a gorgeous venue on the west side of town btw)

http://www.thevistaonsewardhill.com/

Since we had ours on a weekend, they required we use their caterer, which is Sterling Affairs. It wasn't as ideal as using a specifically veg caterer, but they did a pretty good job. Instead of trying to make something themselves, they bought those Vegetarian Plus black pepper steaks in bulk (which was what we'd shown them as an example of the kind of thing we wanted). They also made mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls, garlic asparagus and appetizer stuff with hummus.

So all in all it was pretty great, but the other downside of having to use their caterer was that the pricing was really steep.

Good luck!

My husband and I married 4 years ago (before Green Island Catering was around). We got married at the Unitarian Church, which was a VERY affordable venue. Whole Foods catered it. The food was awesome, and the upside was that they were actually much more affordable than a regular caterer. However, if an all vegan caterer had been around at that time I would have used them. On a side note, don't skimp on the photographer. awesome

Congratulations!

These comments are so helpful-- thanks! If you've attended a vegan wedding and/or reception in Austin info about these events would also be beneficial.

This won't apply to the food and venue questions, but one of my favorite resources for DIY and low cost decor ideas is pinterest and freecycle. We didn't get married in Austin, but were able to do our wedding for under $2500 from venue to dresses and photography, thanks to DIY ideas and the help of friends.

My boyfriend used to work at Green Pastures and they treat their employees really badly. They have all sorts of shady practices.

That is all I have to add, I am so not helpful, I have tried Green Island's food now and I thought it was great!

I will check out pinterest- another friend recently mentioned it too and also freecycle. How many guests did you have at your wedding Georgeous?

@ficustree- Thanks for the comment about Green Pastures. It is also helpful to know vendors and venues to avoid.

Hey Kelly! Most of my family is out of state, and my hubby isn't close with many of his relatives, so we aimed low. I think we invited about 150, roughly 75 attended, several didn't stay for the reception due to travel arrangements.
