Mexican restaurants

Looking for mexican restaurants around Austin that are Vegan-friendly.  I already know of Mr. Natural, which is 100% vegetarian, but I need some that are both omnivore and herbivore-friendly, since I may have family visiting from out of town who need their meat and/or cheese.  From what I've witnessed in the past, the wait staff at mexican restaurants have no knowledge of veganism, and when you state that you're vegetarian, they automatically assume you eat eggs and dairy products and give you a dish with eggs and cheese in it.  They also would have no idea whether or not their tortillas or chips are processed with eggs, dairy and/or honey, but from what I've seen, half the time they are!  So if you know a little more about what to look for if I ever eat out at Serranos or another regular mexican restaurant around town, I'd appreciate it if you can let me know!

If you go to Guerro's, ask for the vegan menu.

Vivo's puffy tacos are pretty satisfying, but not as good as their margaritas.

Polvo's has a few vegan options, the burrito and potato flautas, just ask for no cheese and order black beans.

Order corn tortillas to be on the safe side.

Vivo's is my current favorite.

El Mercado has a vegetarian section on their menu, and all the items can be veganized if you leave off cheese and/or sour cream. The stuffed pepper is really good, and there aren't many vegan stuffed peppers out there.

I work at Cantina Laredo on 3rd and Colorado. It seems to have very good non-vegetarian food (looks good, smells good and very popular).

You can order any of the salads (specify no meat or cheese). The only non-vegan dressings are the ranch and honey mustard which are givens. I usually eat the Enchilada de Espinaca (specify no cheese, sub sour cream sauce with ranchera or tomatillo sauce and to be safe, I ask them to cook with oil instead of butter because sometimes different cooks use different cooking methods). The Enchilada de Avocado is good too, you just have to specify no cheese and no sour cream drizzle.

Stay away from:
flour torillas- lard
refried beans- lard
chipotle wine sauce- dairy

Chips and Salsa are fine, and so are the black and borracho beans. The rice is also delicious and chicken stock-free!

That sounds positively initimidating, Amandah1988. Haha.

Our company has recently been catering with Casa Chapala. They do veggie fajitas that are vegan. Their flour tortillas are vegan. Add black beans, guacamole and salsa (all vegan without lard) to the fajitas. Their online menu also has a small number of other vegetarian selections.

haha. No! It's not that bad, I promise! I wouldn't suggest going there if everyone is vegan, but if you are the only vegan out of an entire meat-eating group, it is a good option.

El Arroyo! I've only been to one off of Far West in my hood. But they're actually really vegan friendly. They have some pretty imaginative choices too. They have a black bean stuffed avocado, a stuffed pepper that has lots of veggies in it, and portobello mushroom fajitas. Refried beans are vegan. And I asked to make sure they didn't use any butter to saute the veggies.

Last night I went to Maudie's with a friend, and it was really good! I had delicious potato tacos with some pepper slices. The salsa was awesome. The prices were really good too. They have a separate veggie menu. I did not ask about the beans and rice. I assumed they were okay since they were on the separate veggie menu. My dish came with black beans - which were exceptionally tasty black beans. If I go there again I'll ask about the beans and rice - just to be sure. Just thought you guys might like to know.

Zandunga Mexican Bistro - I'm a major supporter awesome  They even veganize the stuffed avocado.
Molca's Mexican - They have really good, fresh fajitas and they use white rice and canned black beans so it's no problemo, good happy hour.
Copa Bar and Grill - Again, I give many props.  They make the best mole enchiladas on Earth, and spicy manguitos.
Corazon - Haven't eaten there but e-mailed and they have legitimate substitutions ready for vegans.
El Sol y La Luna - They have tofu and soyrizo and while they are not the most adventurous with it on the menu, the fact that they have it means you can substitute it where you please.  PS they have $10 long island pitchers right now, very crazy.

Which kind of tofu did you get in the puffy tacos? We got one that they said came with some sort of chili, but the tofu was totally bland and not really cooked.

I think I got the guacamole and/or bean instead of tofu.

Matt's El Rancho has a few vegetarian items that can be ordered vegan.  I used to go there a lot with my family because it's one of my parent's favourite restaurants.

I thought That Torchy's didn't have anything vegan????  Don't they put cheese in their beans or something weird like that?
