Daiya cheese a Whole Foods!

Hi everyone! *waves*

Longtime lurker, I finally decided to register to Austin Vegans. Yay! Anyway I just wanted to let you all know that Whole Foods at 6th and Lamar has Daiya cheese. We have it on our Pizza and Sandwich island, so come on over and enjoy a grilled "cheese" sandwich that doesn't absolutely suck or a vegan pizza that is  not just spinach/artichokes and sauce

Now I know that  a lot of people hate Whole Foods but I figured that vegans gotta stick together and Daiya is amazing stuff so why not let everyone know?

I'm a hater of vegan cheese substitutes, especially Teese and FYH, (yuck!) but Daiya is just plain magical.

So please don't hate me because I work at the Food Hole.

Does that mean they don't have Vegan Gourmet any longer at the Pizza and Sandwich island?

Hmm, interesting. I'll have to check it out. I'm not vegan but I can't have milk protein so I am always interested in trying out new vegan food. happy

So, I just got back from there. They don't sell the Daiya cheese (no retailers do yet, they're working on a retail launch strategy, according to www.daiyafoods.com). They also weren't advertising it at the pizza and sandwich island, so I didn't ask. (Employee: can you ask them to please list it on the menu so we don't feel like we're ordering some top secret ingredient? happy

However, in the vegan area of the store (near the vegan island), they have pre-made pizzas in the vegan fridge. And after looking at the ingredients, I'm guessing they use Daiya cheese (they have pea protein). So, I bought 3, and I'm cooking one now.

OK that was tasty. Glad I bought 3.

The future is looking up for vegans and the milk protein-allergic happy

You probably have to ask for it.  They had FYH (aka Vegan Gourmet) before, but it wasn't listed on the menu.

We'll happily go grab some for you, I don't know why we aren't listing it though, I'll ask.

I definitely will. I just discovered the Daiya last night when I clocked in for my shift, so it is brand spankin' new to us. I'm working on it (just ask for Daiya cheese in the meantime). This morning I was plugging it to every vegan/vegetarian that came by the station.

A quick note, ask for the flat bread or ciabatta bread because those are definitely vegan. I found out this morning that our wheat has honey in it. Boo!
Plus melting Daiya on ciabatta is a hassle but I'll work on a quick press method for it.

I went in this afternoon and now that I'm looking at your avatar, I'm pretty sure you're who helped me!

I got grilled tofu on ciabatta with roasted tomato, roasted red peppers, grilled onion and Daiya. It was GOOD... this was my first time trying Daiya and I'm hooked.

Ok cool!  So my next question is:
Can I order a pizza with Vegan Gourmet on one half, and Daiya on the other?
I know they probably take different lengths to cook, and it violates one of the most important rules of the universe - Don't cross the streams! - , but I just had to ask

I'm glad they're keeping the Vegan Gourmet.  I prefer that stuff anyways.

I'm not sure which one I prefer, which is why I'd like to try both at the same time. ;-)
