I've never met a straight-edger who went by that rule, only heard of them in fairybook tales....

I'm straight edge as well.

As for sXers and sex, I think it's more in regards to not being promiscuous than actually being celibate.

I'm what I like to call fraight-edge. I only drink if someone gives me alcohol. Like for example, a liquor store employee whom I have happened to give money to. Same with sex.

At first I thought you were asking if we were seXy. happy

I had never heard of sXe before. I had to Wiki it.

I guess you might could say that I'm sXe too ... but only because I don't get out much.

If I weren't socialphobic, I wouldn't be sXe though. ( at least the drinking and sex part )

The staying celebate part ?
HA !

I have NEVER had a problem trying to stay celebate.

So .... you mean there are actually people that WANT to remain celebate ?

Why ?

Also, what are your reasons for not drinking ? ( do you mean avoiding getting DRUNK, or even avoiding just feeling a littled buzzed ?)
Personally, I don't buy beer because I'd feel like an alchoholic drinking by myself ( which is all the time )

i think there is an important distinction between sXe and drug-free. sXe is a punk subculture where individuals abstain from the above said vices. plenty of people are drug-free, including my 82 year old grandmother. but it's always been sort of an unspoken rule that claiming sXe requires an understanding and affiliation with the punk hardcore music scene. in other words, if you call yourself sXe and you can't recite the lyrics to at least one youth of today, minor threat or gorilla biscuits song, chances are you're not sXe rather you are drug-free.

btw, i'm neither sXe or drug-free so please take all this with a grain of salt.

Like John said, straight edge is a punk subculture, although I'm not sure I would be as strict with the labeling. It grew out of the '80s hardcore punk scene as a reaction to the "sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll" lifestyle that killed and/or degraded so many rock icons and their fans.

My take on straight edge is that we basically strive to lead a clean lifestyle in order to have a clear head. So no alcohol or drugs at all. Many early straight edgers saw vegetarianism as a logical inclusion as well.

btw, I'm just explaining my take and support for the sXe lifestyle. I don't think any of us are trying to pass judgment on anyone.

I didn't drink at all for several years (for the reasons Peter just mentioned as the tenets of sXe, as well as anti-corporate reasons and the problems I had with alcohol as such an integral part of our culture), and used the term a little bit, but I didn't windmill or pick up change at shows, and I don't really care for the music of the scene. It was kind of an easy way to say I didn't drink without sounding like a recovering alcoholic or something. Finally I stopping using the term at all because I wasn't part of the "scene". And it's a good thing, because in the past year, every once in a grrrreat while I have a little sake (made in Berkeley) at my favorite Japanese restaurant or a glass of wine from an hour away or a beer made just over the hill. I didn't have a drink until it stopped being a big deal (for a long time I was SOOOOOO anti-drinking that I'd really stress myself out about it). The first time was with my girlfriend at Millennium when I got my book deal. One glass of wine.

You will NEVER catch me with a silver bullet in my hand. And I never, ever get drunk. Ug. Can't stand it. Losing control of myself makes me panic.

However, I'm going to take a tour of the Sho Chiku Bai brewery (I don't know if they call it a brewery - but it's where it's made) with some friends, and I heard they, you know, give you a lot.

I appreciate the art form of fermentation (whether it's wine or kombucha or sake), and the history behind it. I still hate the, you know, corporate/cultural part of it. I just do what feels okay to me.

Also, I smoke weed, like, every single day.

OMG JUST KIDDING.

I know a couple of people with medical prescriptions for marijuana for anxiety and sleep problems. Oh, California.
