Wheatsville Co-op submitted by Ross

Wheatsville is Austin's local co-operative grocery, owned by its members. It's fairly small compared to the large stores of the area like HEB, Central Market and Whole Foods, but its selection is wonderful for vegans. They've got a nice variety of organic vegetables, a great bulk section(even natural soaps/shampoos), and a deli in the back of the store that makes some great little items to scarf. The general manager is vegan and the store's very receptive to ordering items not in stock for you. In addition, the staff has always been a fun crew to shop with.

It's worth noting that you can order items by the case and receive an extra 10% discount. There are bulk order forms at the checkout and they'll call you when it gets in. |

Wheatsville is cozy and everyone remembers the kids' names, and there are a few things that are actually cheaper than H-E-B or that I can't get there, but I can't afford to do all of our shopping there. Most of the time they have some good deals on organic produce. |

Wheats' may not compete with H-E-B but it definitely gives WholeFoods a run for their money. Nearly all their bulk items are cheaper, or competetively priced when compared to WholeFoods. Also, in regards to ordering in bulk: we happen to have the perfect forum for finding other folks who may be interested in splitting bulk order items up... |

If you need to pick up a quick vegan meal- or you've a hankering for some vegan cake/cookies/creaminess -- this is hands down the place to turn to. I cannot count the number of times I've been on my way to work with little time to spare and made a mental rundown of every possible shop to stop by for some grub that's nearby (Central Market= ain't got shizzit for vegan take out, Sun Harvest North= do I really want ANOTHER solar falafel? restaraunts= too slow/expensive) -and I inevitably end up here |

i gotta say, if you are on a low income or a tight budget, food should be the last thing to save money on. though it always is. bu it's a false economy. seriously, ditch the luxuries first before you cut back on what has a direct impact on your family's health. for organic produce you gotta hit the local farms / csa's for the best deals. some even do work/trade (see the discussion forum for more info) |

It should be mentioned that the members chose to vote-in a moratorium on carrying bodycare products made by companies that test on animals...its easy to be cruelty-free at wheatsville! |

Besides the famous popcorn tofu (which you can now get on a daiya pizza), they have an incredible hot bar. Everything they make there is awesome. |
